Johannesburg - A man was killed and another was critically injured when the cars they were travelling in collided on the N1 south near Fourways, north of Johannesburg, paramedics said.

"Paramedics and rescue services that arrived on the scene [on Friday night] found cars and debris scattered across the highway," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

The man was found dead near his vehicle. The second man was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

It was not clear which vehicle the injured man had been travelling in as both men were found lying on the road, Vermaak said.

According to bystanders, a vehicle apparently broke down in the middle of the highway.

"The driver of the vehicle was standing outside of his vehicle. Another bystander explained that multiple vehicles crashed into each other after one vehicle collided into the broken down vehicle and its driver," Vermaak said.

Several lanes of the highway were closed for traffic while rescuers were busy on the scene.

Occupants from several vehicles sustained only minor injuries and declined to receive further medical care, Vermaak said.
