Cape Town – Viacom’s Nickelodeon has pulled a cartoon meant for kids after parents discovered a naughty inset of a bare-breasted woman in an episode of Oggy and the Cockroaches on NickToons (DStv 308).
The episode broadcast on 5 March on NickToons – the Nickelodeon TV channel from Viacom targeting young viewers – has a flash of bare breasts in a framed picture of a big bosomed lady.
TMZ broke the news, reporting that Nickelodeon has no comment, but pulled Oggy and the Cockroaches from NickToons’ schedule line-up and also removed the show from its online site.
The animation show is produced by Zilam and Gaumont Film Company.
Secret inappropriate imagery in kids’ animation – inserted by producers and creators as hidden easter eggs for themselves – is nothing new.
In 1994 a 4-year old boy saw the letters “S E X” in a cloud of dust in Disney’s The Lion King, 1977’s The Rescuers has a naked woman in a window - among the more infamous subliminal messages in kids’ animation. It once even led Bart Simpson to write on the blackboard in one episode’s opening of The Simpsons: “I will not plant subliminAL messageGOREs”.
